Roaches

Roaches are probably the most hated pests by homeowners. Whether you admit it or not, you’ve probably had problems with these sneaky, little creatures at some point in your life. You might wonder where roaches come from. Contrary to popular belief, roaches do not only reside in messy places; they also thrive even in the cleanest of houses. A dirty environment will just make their stay longer. Nobody wants cockroaches in their house. But what’s annoying is that roaches make themselves feel at home! You can find them at the back of picture frames, on your countertop, and under your kitchen sink. Sometimes, a flying roach may even welcome you upon opening the door of your bathroom.

Resilient Roaches

Did you know that roaches have lived for over 300 million years? They have outlasted the big and mighty dinosaurs! This fact raises a bit of concern: How in the world can you eliminate roaches when they survived a comet impact? Don’t feel hopeless though; there are still ways on how to get rid of roaches in your home.

How to Get Rid of Roaches

Before we get to the specifics, it is first helpful to understand how roaches enter your home. You might never know it but you can actually bring in roaches to your house accidentally. A roach may be hiding in the plastic bag of your grocery items or one managed to enter your briefcase when you were at work. In most cases though, roaches find places that satisfy their needs which are food, moisture, and warm shelter. This means that these are the things you have to eliminate in order to drive away these pests.

1. Keep your house clean.

The first thing to do is to make sure that your house is clean. Clean up stacks of newspapers and paper bags. Never leave leftovers on your countertop. If there are spills on your kitchen or any part of your home, clean them immediately. It is also a good idea to store fruits, vegetables, and bread into airtight containers. Also, do not neglect the areas of your house that are often left unnoticed such as corners of infrequently used rooms, at the back of large appliances, and inside the stove and oven.

2. Locate their hideout.

This sounds simple but can be extremely time-consuming. You can use strips of roach traps in places where you think roaches breed. These are usually at places where there are nooks and crannies. This can take a week or even longer.

3. Search for places that collect water.

Roaches tend to go to areas where there are watering holes. Take a closer inspection of your plant pots, the drip plate beneath your refrigerator, and faucets. Make sure that these are dry especially at night to get rid of roaches.

4. Fill in the gaps.

If you see roaches entering a hole in your wall, seal the gap with a caulk to prevent the roaches from getting back out.

5. Use boric acid.

Boric acid is a common item used to get rid of pests. You can buy it in powder form and dust it behind your cabinets, under sinks and appliances, and in cracks you can’t seal with a caulk.

6. Use ready-made sprays.

There are many ready-made sprays on the market that are particularly designed to get rid of roaches. However, it is important to note that most of these sprays are contact-repellants. This means that you need to spray it directly on the roaches to kill them. Because of this, it is usually suggested not to rely solely on these products and consider using boric acid and roach baits.
